I was just a silent observer, witnessing their story unfold without finding the spark of magic that would make me an active participant and cheer for them, worry for them and eventually love them.
Lila annoyed me a couple of times with her imprudence and her recklessness but there is no doubt she was a badass and nwme female lead. I liked Kell a little more and I waited for the signs that I was falling for him, but they never came. I’m still intrigued about his magic and his past though and I’m curious about the way his relationship with Lila will develop.

My nephew kept at me about my criticism of Harry Potter because I hadn’t read the books, well, with all this pandemic mess, I had time to spare so I started with the first book, and read straight through to the seventh.
I can say from my perspective as an avid reader, Ms. Rowling is no Agatha Christie, or J. Tolkien; however she does write compelling stories here that keep the reader’s interest. Many things I found to be predictable which irritated my nephew to no end; but this didn’t matter; she did have enough surprises to keep you guessing.
I read for the joy of reading and can see the attraction of the books–however I also watched each movie after I finished a book and have to say–not that it surprised me at all–the books, including this one, are far better than the movie, even with all the CGI that makes “eye-candy” for the young folks who become Potterheads. Rowling allowed them to completely change whole sections and timelines of the story in the book, when transferred to the screen. In either case, I find this to be the darkest of the series and I personally wouldn’t want a child of mine reading it until they were going on 16 because of language and the depth of rather dark imagery–I know kids today see and hear much worse, but I’m an old foggy and just think this should be reserved for upper teens as it definitely has the potential to create creepy imagery that could traumatize the younger children.
Parents, you be the judge as to whether your kids can handle a lot of death, darkness, eerie scenes and sexual innuendo, never direct at whatever age is best suited for your kids. Now that’s my view as a parent and uncle As a reader, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the series and have my favorites despite having read all seven I need closure and 7 provides that.

But is does set a better example for young impressionable pre-teens than gushing stories about sparkly co-dependency. Because Katniss is cool and a badass. She is fierce, independent, resourceful, intelligent, and skilled. She is loyal to her friends and family. She is a survivor.
She will never allow a guy to carry her around as though she is a delicate flower. She skewers that apple in the pig’s mouth with an arrow in front of the Gamemakers in the most awesome way imaginable. For all that, I love this imperfect, surly, prickly, sullen and perpetually pissed-off, quick to jump to judgment, and sometimes clueless girl. And I love this book because – despite The Hunger Games being YA literature that seems to hinge on the romantic puppy love – the happiness of Katniss does not revolve solely around a cute male lead.
Katniss and Peeta could have had plenty of other reasons to care for each other that don’t include puppy love – they are from the same district, same school, he gave her that bread, she trades with his dad, etc. But alas, that did not happen. I understand that Collins had to cater to the way that YA publishers and Hollywood tend to view us, the female audience.
At least Katniss escapes the perils of insta-love. But poor Peeta – all of his actions are colored by him being “Lover Boy”, and I think it detracts from his personality and reduces him from a kind compassionate person to a fool in love who’d do anything for Katniss only because of his physical attraction to her.
Oh, Rue Now, back to the GOOD. Rue, my favorite character. Little, fragile, almost-too-perfect Rue who was clearly doomed from the start. Who despite her appearance was neither weak nor helpless. Whose view spoiler [death scene hide spoiler ] brought the human side to Katniss who, until that point, was almost bordering on robotic.
There was real grief and anger and sadness in that scene, and from that point on I began to care. Suzanne Collins strictly follows the “show, don’t tell” rule. Actually, she does it to such an extent that the book reads almost like a screenplay.
The plot moves along at a fast pace, only slowing down a bit in the drawn out Capitol makeover and cave makeout sessions. Collins does not shy away from gruesome scenes, making many parts of the book hit home. Katniss easily beats the majority of the popular YA heroines. And because of all her coolness, this gets 3. Somehow it just won’t seem sincere if I’m trying to slit his throat. Lawrence’s Katniss has such emotional depth, and she brings such truthfulness to her character.

Hello, I am back again with another breakdown review while I relearn how to write reviews. We quickly learn so many characters, but we even more quickly learn what type of character Katniss Everdeen is. The basic premise of this tale is that there are twelve districts and once a year each district will select two young candidates to fight to the death in a game, which will also be broadcasted for the world to see.
Every year, a teenagers name gets added once to this random selection pool, but each year they get older another time their name gets added. Also, you can add your name more times to get food and supplies for your family, and this is very much the norm for most children.
Meanwhile, the boy contestant is Peeta Mellark, who Katniss remembers giving her bread when her family was starving after the death of their father. Together, they are thrown into a competition that no one believes they will be able to come back alive. Especially since only one victor is allowed, therefore one of them will most certainly have to die. The journey Haymitch is about to take alongside these two kids as their mentor, whew. Also, unknown to Katniss, a start of a public romance is brewing with Peeta to help their image.
We also get to meet President Snow and start to get a vibe of all the evil things he has been stirring up for some time now. We also get to learn about the different privileges of the other districts, and how some of these candidates view this as an honor to volunteer their life for without needing to save a little sister.
Peeta is coached to very much play the star-crossed lovers card, and he even tells Caesar that he loves Katniss more than anything. And Cinna says my favorite line in the entire series to Katniss. So simple, so beautiful, so heartbreaking. And we quickly see that people are starting to form groups to take out some of the weaker players.
After with the help of some killer, engineered wasps… she is able to get down from this tree and gets a bow. Katniss sings to her, and realizes that nothing will be the same in her life again, no matter how long she has left. And she also knows that Peeta has been wounded and is missing.
They also share a kiss when they find shelter, and she vows that she is not going to let him die. She does get very injured in the process but makes it back to heal him. Thresh helped Katniss because of what she did for Rue. District 11 just deserved better. Cato is still alive, still the biggest threat, and still hella annoying. And then we have some more berry foreshadowing when a girl dies eating some.
Kato runs at them, while wolves start running after them. Well, I think at least. They for sure have the tributes eyes, and it just makes it extra freaky. But basically, after some fighting and some monologues, Kato is dying to the wolves slowly, but Katniss puts him out of his misery.
They were promised earlier that if Katniss and Peeta were the final two of the game that they could both win and live, but now the game makers are trying to change that game right before them. And since they are saying there can only be one victor, Katniss takes a risk with those beloved berries and her an Peeta threaten suicide before all the people watching from the comfort of their own homes.
Katniss wakes up in a hospital where her body is healing and she is able to hear out of her one ear again. She gets to see Cinna, and believe that maybe their lives will be normal again. But Katniss quickly realizes that the Capitol is terribly upset that she played with them, and they are not going to ignore her actions in the game. They both have taken so much damage physically and mentally, and they know that Snow is not through hurting them, or the people they love, by a longshot.

A lot of things which I more and more perceive and which are not solely connected with this book but with the metaphor behind the words. People attach themselves to fictional freedom without seeing what really something is and which unfortunately is here to stay because you can’t wake a person who is pretending to be asleep.
Freedom of flesh. In comparison to the freedom of and from your mind which is nowhere to be found. And this is why I detest this book, although detest is such a strong from the ego word. And where after the battle of ”united” people we heal and repair the damages for the better tomorrow.
The society cancer of western civilisation thinking. Heal the damage, never heal the cause of it. We would be discussing how humanity can help each other with being better, with taking responsibility and with being open to each other. And yet imagine this paradox we live in: better, as if the majority of population can even understand that we are in constant blood thirst to achieve peace. With war comes peace. While along the way we are trying to be better and safer. Yet most people deliberately choose to live on the utmost lowest level of their existence.
In fear, frightened of itself. And people read books which are so extreme in their bullshit. And people connect with Katniss because she is the heroine.
She has managed to outsmart the system. Instead of thinking that she was not even supposed be there in the first place. Because we live in society that does this to their children. And instead of working on yourself, how to achieve your inner peace, you associate yourself again with the group because it feels better to be in the tortured crowd, instead of being alone and awakened.
It is just emo gibberish. Leave Katniss alone. And in the end, it is just a book. The system as it is, the plot of this book is just another evidence to show us how we are controlled. That we are left barren from our true selves which we only find in empathy, love towards each other and genuinely understanding that we are one and everything is one. And the only reason I am writing this review here, the only reason I am giving it so much attention is to tell what is on my mind since it is so widely popular and since I have read it.
As if having money is any critieria for life, as if not having your own free will and education and information means nothing. And the other side of the rich coin is poverty with people who believe in symbols, who are sidetracked with religions, censured TV, economy and utter lack of information circulation.
And a lot of people here are trying to disregard this review and want to reassure me that I am so terribly wrong. So I followed as well screaming Goodreads recommendations and I bought a book that is stupid, violent and written so plainly but of course written for vast masses so they can be touched by fake social awareness.
And this is my silver lining. Because it has been like this throughout centuries and with the biggest thinkers of our civilisation. What they meant and wanted to show, is definitely not what most of the public projected. It is just a constant reminder how so many things are left unrecognised while these superficial stories which evoke cheap emotions are always so hugely praised. It could have been just a little story but never underestimate the obese octopus that is called In God And Country We Trust – code red mentality.
Mentality of humans which are too ignorant, beautifully naive and untouched basically with what is means to be socially aware.
And although this is a teen book, it is more deeply hurting and sickening because if you want to influence somebody, of course you will influence the children — and yet there is nothing that children can learn from it. They can learn some things, we all need little courageous Katniss, but on a deeper subtler level is it just an intravenous injection of more Nothing and more Numbing and more Disconnected.
At least they read is one of the arguments. And argument as fruitfull as at least they eat GMO food. One food for the blind intellect, other for the digestion which both results in basic survival without any interference of you in all of it. Because it takes courage and guts and a pinch of anarchy to stop, turn around and start questioning what is handed.
For me, the thought about giving this to a child is sickening especially because we live in this world where all the life criterias are upside down.
Because if it is served somebody is earning money and you are just getting fatter and sicker. And the children will learn how to question if you teach them how to find not if you broadcast them the answers. Not if you teach them through aggressive examples and if you keep the nation in cold sweat especially if you are lucky enough to live in the countries where oppression is not the issue but consumerism, body image and mediocrity have you on the leash.
I am astonished with a fact that around What is it that fascinates them so much. And it’s about a girl Katniss Everdeen, living in the far away future, who was chosen to participate in a cruel Big Brother game, in which 24 contestants children age kill each other, because live TV has become demanding, and the public loves reality blood and violence.
That’s it. A little bit of undeveloped and unbelievable romance between her and two boys, a little bit of her abandoned family problems, a little bit of The 5th element movie political structure, mutants and pop stylists. In the beginning, first 50 pages were well written.
There was suspense, Katniss was sweet and witty, but overall this book is a shitty meltdown. Adding the ridiculous cliffhanger ending. Some people here are using words like dystopian literature, and then write essays about how this book is the core of it. The core is pointlessly graphic and sadistic, without any concrete message except of the negative: this book is just proving that the world today is fucked up if this book is so successful.
In a metaphorical way it is promoting political establishments of certain countries and that is getting tiring. Not all people are eager to swallow the shit of general brainwashing. Katniss being the heroine ironical quote marks. Being loyal and darling and a role model. Just wake up. Life is happening and some pretty dark things are happening while you are thinking that Katniss is the representative of the club called liberation.
For me, in a bookish way it stands for one bad one night stand, kiss and forget. But as always, readers tend to bring fiction to their real life and just as many think that kittens and superheroes are comfort zones, a lot of readers perceive this plot as their own little shrine. But that is me not being in tune with the mainstream population which is too distracted with billboards.
Because it is easier, because why protest, why not simply take what you are given – eat your GMO Monsanto’s company hamburgers, eat your cancer giving Nestle products and think that The Hunger Games are the best franchise ever, like ever. This shit sells. It’s genuinely bad but excellently targeted.
You know, it evokes pride and loyalty and massacring children, freedom and scandal and Hollywood. It goes very well with all the Kardashian filth. As long as it sells, sells, sells. And marketing agencies know that people are united when they are jealous, when they want and they with those hamburgers want freedom. Nobody is going to kill their Katniss in a goddam book!
Take a look around you. And then the punch line for this book comes from the so called activism from the shopping mall. People who devour literature of this kind and think that everything is all right while in the same time, fuck, you are getting oozingly fat.
Bottom line. This book is very shallow and MTV culture oriented, like a classical example of easy consummated pop-literature; I’m very surprised that it didn’t come with some trash magazine subscription. If it doesn’t have savage brutality, prize money and prefix ”media coverage” then it won’t be appealing and educational because surely this is how children of 21st century survive this techno media world; through examples of true moral issues and realistic outcomes.
Have another gulp of Coca-Cola along the way while you listen to dubstep shit. It saddens me when a violent hillbillish book is so popular. What is there to truly identify yourself with. Except if your chicken soup for soul are basic emotions which come with buy 1 get 1 free.
PLOT It’s a potentially exciting but gruesome story, but most of the characters were rather flat, much of the plot was predictable it’s not hugely original; in particular, it is VERY similar to the Japanese “Battle Royale” , and there were too many flaws in the plot.
I fail to understand its very high ratings. Post-apocalyptic America Panem is divided into a wealthy and technologically advanced Capitol and twelve subsidiary districts of oppressed people who exist in dire poverty, with inadequate food, housing, and health care and hardly any technology.
To reinforce the power of the Capitol by instilling fear in the population, once a year, two children from each region are selected by lots to fight to the death in a reality show. If that were not bad enough, the whole thing is utterly corrupt in multiple ways, plus the public bet on the outcome, and sponsors can sway the results.
Did I mention these are children? Some are as young as 12, though the narrator is A compulsory full-body wax on a teen seems rather pervy and who would want to bet on, let alone sponsor a child-killing tournament, even if it’s by helping one of the contestants?
As the book keeps reminding readers, one person’s survival is only possible by the death of all the others. CRUELTY TO CHILDREN I realise that horrendous things are done to children around the world every day extreme poverty, child soldiers, sexual assault, genital mutilation etc , but in none of those cases is the sole intention that all but one child dies, and nor is it organised by the government for a sick combination of sport, entertainment, punishment and profit.
Humans often lack compassion, but I was never convinced by Collins’ world – especially the fact this outrage has continued for three generations it’s the 74th games , apparently without the Capitol even needing to invoke gods or supernatural powers to justify their cruelty!
Could a barbaric annual tournament really be such a powerful incentive not to rise up in all that time? I don’t think so. BIG ISSUES Nevertheless, it tackles some big themes that are particularly pertinent to teens: the nature of friendship; divided loyalties; the difference between love and friendship; who to trust; whether the ends justify the means; the need to repay favours; the danger of power, wealth and celebrity; the corrupting influence of reality TV; the need for independence, and whether you can trust a parent who abandons you.
It all feels rather laboured to me, but it might not if I were a teen, which only reinforces my puzzlement at the number of adults who have enjoyed it.
I must be missing something. I predicted the main plot twist less than a quarter of the way in and the fact that Katniss is telling the story limits the possible outcomes , but the suspense was broken when it was made explicit way before the end. There are some other twists between then and the final page, but by then I was rather annoyed with the whole thing.
I suppose they had become inured to it, but on the other hand, that meant they knew the horror of it. I just didn’t believe there was as little fear in them as there appeared to be – given that they are children. It can only be a tiny part of the USA because each district specialises in only one thing coal mining, agriculture etc and has just one town square that can accommodate everyone 8, people in District 12 and yet it’s a day’s train journey from District 12 to the Capitol.
It doesn’t seem like a very plausible settlement pattern in a post-disaster world, even given the totalitarian regime concentrating people in a few centres makes it easier to observe and perhaps control them, but it also creates more opportunities for opposition movements to develop. It is even possible that they could all survive. The second point is what makes LotF a better book, in my opinion.
Of course, there are other, more obvious, parallels with extreme “reality” shows such as “Survivor” and “I’m a Celebrity, get me out of here”, but the fundamental differences are not just that contestants in those shows do not fear for their lives, but that they are adults who have chosen to enter.
Any fans who read this will now hate me. I wanted to enjoy this book, and I read it all the way through, making notes as usual, but to no avail.
Shelves: young-adult , utopia-dystopia , reviewed , chosen-girls , classic-young-adult , girls-rule. It is beautiful for the unflinching way it shows you, as a reader, your own willingness to disregard people who are different from you – how you are the Capitol audience.
But, it is important as a story about girls. I had not initially thought about articulating that point because it seemed so obvious to me, and I am bad at recognizing my own assumptions. Lately, though, I have seen so many people, both men and women, acting as though this remarkable book is a piece of fluff that I realized maybe what I love most about The Hunger Games is not as obvious as it seems.
To me, this series is important because it is a landmark departure from the traditional story about girls. Too often, stories objectify women. When I say stories objectify girls, I mean they talk about girls as though they are fleshlights that sometimes have handy dandy extra gadgets such as an all-purpose cleaning mechanism and food dispensing function. Sidebar: if you are inclined to now google the word “fleshlight,” I encourage you to consult the urban dictionary definition here before doing that, as the google results will probably be NSFW and also NSF those of you whose parents might check your browsing history.
Do parents know how to do that? Sorry for the sidebar, I am just intending to make an explicit point, and now I am feeling uncomfortable about what that explicit point might mean to the target audience of this book. Girls, you are probably badass like Katniss, and you are definitely not a fleshlight. Back to my rant about typical objectification in storytelling: often the girls fleshlights have fancy outer designs because it makes the fleshlights happy to be fancy.
Sometimes they have skeeeeeery castration functions , and other times they work as helpful databases for music or video games or whatever UR into. A lot of times, I will hear people refer to this type of objectification as treating women like they are just a vagina, or a pair of boobs, but I think there is something to the stories that is less human and more sexbot machine than that complaint covers. So, in all of those links, I have tried to include books written by men and by women because I think that women think of ourselves this way almost as often as men think of us this way.
The link from The Ugly Truth , for example, shows both a man and a woman treating women like fleshlights. I have also included both books I love and books I hate because, ultimately, I do think girls adopt this story about themselves, and I also think we can pretty easily identify with a male protagonist and disregard female characters who look nothing like humans.
For example, The Sun Also Rises is one of my favorite books in the whole world, even though it does not contain any women who resonate with my experience of humans. And I don’t think it’s necessarily bad that I can enjoy stories where women are only fleshlights, as long as I can still be whoever I want to be without a positive role model. I think it’s good to enjoy stories and take what we can get from them, and so I don’t regret that I love The Sun Also Rises.
In seeing some male reactions to The Hunger Games , I am reminded that most men do not identify with female protagonists the way women have been trained to identify with male protagonists. This seems like a huge disadvantage for men to be in, to me, and if you are a man reading this review, I would ask you to check out your bookshelves.
How many female authors are on your shelves? How many of the books those authors wrote have no central male character? If you have a minute after that, check the shelves of a woman you are friends with and see how many of her books were written by men or have no central female character. Odds are the results will be pretty different. Katniss is strong and broken, and powerful in her brokenness. Masculinity does not have to mean emotional cowardice. Hopefully, we never think of our primary purpose in life, in the way so many stories think of it, as making penises erect.
Hopefully, we never think of ourselves as gadgets that are super fun for other people. Yes, it is also a poignant critique of reality TV and Western callousness about the catastrophes caused by industrialization in the developing world, but that, too, resonates with me in many ways because of its remarkably feminine voice.
It absolutely makes sense to me that this book is not for everyone because of its violence, but I still think that it is objectively important because it shows a perspective that seems authentically feminine to me — that talks like a girl, not like a sexy, fancy gadget.
The Hunger Games is one that does, and it does so in way that is beautiful and important. I want to die as myself. I don’t want them to change me in there.
Turn me into some kind of monster that I’m not. I keep wishing I could think of a way to That I’m more than just a piece in their Games.

She is so strong and bad-ass but she always misunderstands Peeta! It’s so obvious that he loves her but she is in denial! She is so stupid!! And when she realizes his feelings, she just hurt him! Let’s start from the beginning!
What is Hunger Games? Every year, one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 were selected from each of the twelve districts as tributes, who train for a week and then are sent into an arena to fight to the death.
Only one tribute can win the games. This competition is showed to television to be seen by all citizens. So, Katniss’ little sister, Prim, is selected for the games, but Katniss took her place to save her. I volunteer as tribute! He protected her but I will admit she protected him as well! She risked her life to get the medicine needed to heal his leg. But how can she not see that he is madly in love with her?
I loved it when he told her about her singing for the music class, that’s when Peeta realized he was in love with her when he saw that the birds were listening like they did for her father. And right when your song ended, I knew – just like your mother – I was a goner,” Peeta says. Very deep. He is her best friend! At the beginning, she said that she never saw him that way and now what? She is confusing me. Please, not love triangle again!!
I liked Gale but no! He won the Hunger Games of his time. He is also Katniss’ and Peeta’s mentor. It seems at first that he doesn’t like Katniss very much but at the Hunger Games he helped her more than he helped Peeta.
He always supported her in his way. She was the year-old female tribute from District I really liked that Katniss allied with Rue. They were amazing together. But Rue died. I understand only one can win our case two but I felt so sad when she died. Not only her though. A lot innocent kids die because of the Capitol. It’s not fair. So katniss and Peeta can be allies. But when all the other tributes died it was announced that the rule they said early has been canceled.
I was so angry! They did it on purpose. She is so stupid. He didn’t want to fight her and she thought that he could kill her. But it was a trick. I don’t know why I didn’t when it was a series that completely took over my life for a short while. But recently I’ve been thinking about posting something in this review space and after just watching the second film which I think was amazing and better than the first , now seems like as good a time as any to talk about why I love Katniss and nearly everything about this series.
I gave this book four stars back in and I’m going to leave that rating as it is because it’s an indicator of my thoughts at the time though they slightly differ now – thoughts which were influenced by having just finished the fantastic, horrifying, brutal and unforgettable Battle Royale manga series. I don’t think it was the best time for myself and Katniss to find one another when I had so much beautiful insanity to compare the book to, but it still managed to have such an effect on me that I instantly told every friend and family member to read it.
Coming back to this now after having spent the last couple of years being bombarded with dystopian YA, I appreciate what Collins has achieved a whole lot more. I appreciate the strength of Katniss as a heroine who commands our attention and holds our love whilst still being what some would consider unlikable; I appreciate the balance of beauty and horror that Collins delivers on every page, treating us constantly to both the darkest despair and rays of hope; and I also – amazingly – appreciate the love triangle.
Love triangles seem to have chased me and hunted me down with every YA read I picked up over the last two or three years – my dislike for romance instantly becoming doubled by the introduction of yet another boy with beautiful eyes.
But Katniss, Peeta and Gale worked for me. They convinced me, held my interest and made me cry. The love triangle worked because it’s outcome wasn’t obvious, because we all wondered and hoped and worried.
Because, either way, I was always going to be half happy and half sad. Katniss still remains for me everything that a female protagonist should be. Or a female hero, at least. She fights for the ones she loves, she’s brave and doesn’t need to be saved. But neither is she a one-dimensional smiling poster-version of a heroine. She falls, she fails, people get hurt because of her and she has to live with that.
We love her and yet she’s antisocial, awkward and moody. She loves other people with all her heart but she’s not much of a team player. In short: she’s a complex portrait of a young woman that doesn’t fall into any neatly defined boxes or categories. Now, perhaps, authors have since tried to recreate her.
But she’s still one of the first and best. I know another review of this book isn’t needed. I know you’ve all probably read it anyway. Or never will. But this isn’t really for anyone else; it’s a reminder to myself of why this book deserves its hype and why I need to remember to come back to it again and again between the new and hopefully amazing YA books I’ll be reading in the future.

I feel pretty safe in saying that if this isn’t still my favorite book of the year when next January rolls around, that I’ll eat a hat. As soon as I finished reading it, I turned around and read it a 2nd time, which I’ve never done before in my life.
It’s got some very meaty issues to chew on, not the least of which is reality TV taken to extremes. I will miss Katniss until I can read about her again. What more could you possibly ask for out of a book? It doesn’t actually come out until October , but if you can get your hands on an ARC, definitely do! I think that the violence in this will be easier for kids to take, since they probably won’t see it quite as clearly as an adult will. None of it is particularly graphic, but it is definitely brutal.
This is on the edge of too dark for me, which is my favorite kind of book. There aren’t many writers who can push it right to the edge for me without going over Zusak comes to mind immediately , but Collins is definitely one of them.
OK, I’ll stop gushing. I may have to re-write this review when I get some perspective. Still my definite favorite book of the year, but all the typos in the finished book were pretty disappointing.
I’ve had 2 teenaged boys at my library read this on my recommendation, and both of them came back asking me for more books like it really there isn’t anything. May-June I’m reading this for the 4th time, with my younger son, who’s finishing up 5th grade. Still as good as ever!! Can’t wait for the movie!! I’ve seen the movie twice so far, and definitely liked it better the 2nd time, when it didn’t have to try to be my favorite book. STILL as good as ever, and the odds will forever be in its favor.

I know there are major story types out there, ones that are repeated over and over again. Shakespeare retold different ways. The bible reinterpreted to 2,, varieties of tales FEED felt utterly original.
If it’s going to be about “the future” we don’t know about, make it original. In my mind dystopia novels survive on “idea” more than “excecution” and while the execution of this was beautiful, the idea was hardly new. In Battle Royal short explanation of BR plot: 40 students put on island forced to kill each other and winner is set for life and put on TV etc There are so many other similarities, from the ways the gamemakers manipulate, to the ways the media encourages, to one character having a fever and the other taking care of them with soup.
There are even “career” battle royal players. In BR you see the emotions before and after someone is killed, their last thoughts, the feeling of the person who killed. It’s actually really beautiful the way it is done, and so believable that put in an arena teens WOULD turn into savages. In The Hunger Games, yes the main characters were fantastic, and many of the lesser as well, but Foxface is only Foxface, and the Careers are never more than random 1-dimensional bad guys.
I am not saying it wasn’t a GREAT read, I’m just saying it shouldn’t shake the publishing earth the way I am pretty sure it is going to. I anticipate this is the next Twilight series people are going to gush over. In a few years we’ll all be hosting Hunger Games final book parties. I’ll be amongst the attendees I’m sure. Also in terms of female main characters, Katiniss may surpass Bella in me wanting to shake sense into a character.
Talk about a smart girl being utterly clueless! Yes, it was great, but eh, maybe I’m just bitter because I think BR is the better book of the two and while Hunger Games will get tons of praise and likely a rather deserved award or two, BR will continue to be banned in many libraries. Amazing what subtracting guns can do to a story. Suddenly it doesn’t feel as violent, but rather is more reminiscent of stories we heard growing up.
The number of swords and arrow deaths in traditional fairytales is nothing to freak out about, but if bullets are flying, it will give “too many ideas” to teens and therefore must be dubbed an adult book. I’m pretty sure if I hadn’t read BR just a few months back this exeedingly long review would have been just as long only instead of a rant it would have just been one long squeeeeeal of delight over how much I loved the book. Geez guys! Alright, alright I’ll read it! Clearly Gregor was merely the prelude. As an author we were accustomed to your fun adventures involving a boy, his sister, and a world beneath our world. But reading it gave me a horribly familiar feeling. There is a certain strain of book that can hypnotize you into believing that you are in another time and place roughly 2. And The Hunger Games? Well as I walked down the street I was under the disctinc impression that there were hidden cameras everywhere, charting my progress home.
Collins has written a book that is exciting, poignant, thoughtful, and breathtaking by turns. It ascends to the highest forms of the science fiction genre and will create all new fans for the writer. One of the best books of the year. Ever since her father died the girl has spent her time saving her mother and little sister Prim from starvation by hunting on forbidden land.
But worst of all is reaping day. Once a year the government chooses two children from each of the twelve districts to compete against one another in a live and televised reality show. Twenty-four kids and teens enter, and only one survives. Why not make it as if Peeta and Katniss were in love with one another? But in a game where only one person can live, Katniss will have to use all her brains, wits, and instincts to determine who to trust and how to outwit the game’s creators.
So sure, there are parts of this plot that have been done before. You could say it’s The Game meets Spartacus with some Survivor thrown in for spice. Some of the greatest works of literature out there, regardless of the readerships’ age, comes about when an author takes overdone or familiar themes and then makes them entirely new through the brilliance of their own writing.
Similarly, Collins takes ideas that have certainly seen the light of day before and concocts an amazingly addictive text. Your story often rests on the shoulders of the protagonist.
Is this a believable character? Do you root for him or her? Katniss, on the other hand, is so good in so many ways. She sacrifices herself for her sister. She tries to save people in the game. Most remarkable to me was the fact that Katniss could walk around, oblivious to romance, and not bug me. You just want to bonk the ladies upside the head with a brick or something. The different here is maybe the fact that since Katniss knows that Peeta has to play a part, she uses that excuse however unconsciously to justify his seeming affection for her.
Thems smart writing. And did I mention the dialogue at all? The humor? The words pop off the page. No faux slang here, or casual references to extinct dolphins. People love to characterize books by gender. It stars a boy? Boy book. A girl? And never stop exploring your options. Just hang on in there. More about Michele Dougherty. The Collector is a thriller novel by English author John Fowles , in his literary debut. Its plot follows a lonely, psychotic young man who kidnaps a female art student in London and holds her captive in the cellar of his rural farmhouse. Divided in two sections, the novel contains both the perspective of the captor, Frederick, and that of Miranda, the captive.
The portion of the novel told from Miranda’s perspective is presented in epistolary form. Fowles wrote the novel between November and March It was adapted into an Academy Award —nominated feature film of the same name in starring Terence Stamp and Samantha Eggar.
The novel is about a lonely young man, Frederick Clegg, who works as a clerk in a city hall and collects butterflies in his spare time. The first part of the novel tells the story from his point of view. He admires her from a distance but is unable to make any contact with her because he is socially underdeveloped. One day, he wins a large prize in the football pools. He quits his job and buys an isolated house in the countryside. He feels lonely, however, and wants to be with Miranda.
Unable to make any normal contact, Clegg decides to add her to his “collection” of pretty, preserved objects, in the hope that if he keeps her captive long enough, she will grow to love him.
After careful preparations, he kidnaps Miranda by drugging her with chloroform and locks her up in the cellar of his house.
He is convinced that Miranda will start to love him after some time. However, when she wakes up, she confronts him with his actions. Clegg is embarrassed and promises to let her go after a month. He promises to show her “every respect”, pledging not to sexually molest her and to shower her with gifts and the comforts of home, on one condition: she can’t leave the cellar. The second part of the novel is narrated by Miranda in the form of fragments from a diary that she keeps during her captivity.
Miranda reminisces over her previous life throughout this section of the novel; and many of her diary entries are written either to her sister or to a man named G. Miranda reveals that G.
At first, Miranda thinks that Clegg has sexual motives for abducting her; but, as his true character begins to be revealed, she realises that this is not true. She begins to pity her captor, comparing him to Caliban in Shakespeare ‘s play The Tempest because of his hopeless obsession with her. Clegg tells Miranda that his first name is Ferdinand eventual winner of Miranda’s affections in The Tempest. Miranda tries to escape several times, but Clegg stops her.
She also tries to seduce him to convince him to let her go. The only result is that he becomes confused and angry. As Clegg repeatedly refuses to release her, she begins to fantasize about killing him.
After a failed attempt to do so, Miranda enters a period of self-loathing. She decides that to kill Clegg would lower her to his level. She refrains from any further attempts to do so. Before she can try to escape again, she becomes seriously ill and dies. The third part of the novel is narrated by Clegg. At first, he wants to commit suicide after he finds Miranda dead; but, after he reads in her diary that she never loved him, he decides that he is not responsible for what happened to her and is better off without her.
He buries her corpse in the garden. The book ends with his announcement that he plans to kidnap another girl. Literary scholars have noted the theme of class in the British caste system as a prominent point of interest in the novel.
Some scholars have compared the power struggle between Frederick and Miranda as exemplifying the Hegelian ” master—slave dialectic “, and that both exert power over one another—both physically and psychologically—despite their differences in social background. In the Journal of Modern Literature , scholar Shyamal Bagchee attests that the novel possesses an “ironic- absurdist view” and contains a significant number of events which are hinged purely on chance.
Bagchee notes the novel’s greatest irony being that Miranda seals her own fate by continually being herself, and that through “each successive escape attempt she alienates and embitters Clegg the more. Fowles takes great care to show that Clegg is like no other person we know. It takes Miranda a long time get rid of her successive stereotyped views of Clegg as a rapist, an extortionist, or a psychotic. She admits to an uneasy admiration of him, and this baffles her.
Clegg defies stereotypical description. Furthermore, Bagchee notes Miranda’s evolution as a character only while in captivity as another paradox in the novel: “Her growing up is finally futile; she learns the true meaning of existentialist choice when, in fact, she has very limited actual choice.
And she learns to understand herself and her life when, in effect, that life has come to a standstill. Bagchee notes that the divided narrative structure of the novel—which first presents the perspective of Frederick, followed by that of Miranda the latter divulged in epistolary form via scattered diary entries —has the characters mirroring each other in a manner that is “richly ironic and reveals of a sombre and frightening view of life’s hazards.
John Fowles is well established as a master of language, using a variety of tools to convey different meanings and bring his characters closer to his reader. He has written a novel which depends for its effect on total acceptance by the reader. There is no room in it for the least hesitation, the smallest false note, for not only is it written in the first person singular, but its protagonist is a very special case indeed. Fowles’s main skill is in his use of language. There is not a false note in his delineation of Fred.
In , Mary Andrews of The Guardian wrote that “Fowles invites us to defy his main character’s excuses and read between the lines, and the facts paint a more chilling picture. The Silver Surfer is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character also appears in a number of movies, television, and video game adaptations. The character was created by Jack Kirby and first appeared in the comic book Fantastic Four 48, published in The Silver Surfer is a humanoid alien with metallic skin who can travel through space with the aid of his surfboard -like craft.
Originally a young astronomer named Norrin Radd on the planet Zenn-La, he saved his homeworld from the planet devourer, Galactus , by serving as his herald. Imbued in return with some portion of Galactus’ Power Cosmic , [4] Radd acquired vast power, a new body and a surfboard-like craft on which he could travel faster than light.
Now known as the Silver Surfer, Radd roamed the cosmos searching for planets for Galactus to consume. When his travels took him to Earth , he met the Fantastic Four , who helped him rediscover his nobility of spirit.
Betraying Galactus, the Surfer saved Earth but was exiled there as punishment. The Silver Surfer debuted as an unplanned addition to the superhero -team comic Fantastic Four 48 March The comic’s writer-editor, Stan Lee , and its penciller and co-plotter, Jack Kirby , had, by the mids, developed a collaborative technique known as the ” Marvel Method “: the two would discuss story ideas, Kirby working from a brief synopsis to draw the individual scenes and plot details, with Lee finally adding the dialogue and captions.
When Kirby turned in his pencil art for the story, he included a new character he and Lee had not discussed. The Silver Surfer soon became a key part of the unfolding story. Following the Surfer’s debut, Lee and Kirby brought him back as a recurring guest in Fantastic Four 55—61, 72, and 74—77 ranging Oct.

Before he leaves, he confines the Surfer to Earth with an invisible barrier that affects only him.
During his exile, the Surfer fights numerous villains, including Doctor Doom , who wants his Power Cosmic, and Mephisto , who wants his soul. The Surfer’s only ally during these trials is a physicist by the name of Al B. Harper, who eventually sacrifices himself to save the world from the Stranger. Banding together with the Hulk and Namor during these wanderings, the Surfer forms the “Titans Three”, a group dedicated to battling evil on Earth.

Galactus declares the Surfer’s exile ended. Embroiled in fresh hostilities between the interstellar Kree and Skrull empires, the Surfer also intervenes in a series of plots by the Elders of the Universe , who plan to become supremely powerful by destroying Galactus and the universe with him.
The Surfer thwarts this plot with the aid of his new love interest, Mantis , the Earth-born cosmic heroine also known as the “Celestial Madonna”. Later, the Surfer works with the alien Annunaki race to gather and protect some of Earth’s most extraordinarily gifted children. During his travels, the Surfer is captured by a portal of the Sakaar Empire. Left weakened and vulnerable by his trip through the portal, the Surfer is subdued and implanted with an obedience disk to ensure he remains loyal to them. Fighting as a gladiator and believed to be the fabled ‘Sakaarson’ due to his appearance , the Surfer is finally forced to face the Hulk along with his Warbound.
Through teamwork and distraction, the Hulk is eventually able to destroy the Surfer’s obedience disk. The Hulk and several other slaves and gladiators are freed when the Surfer uses the Power Cosmic to remove their own obedience disks and give them a way out of the arena, although the Hulk declines the Surfer’s offer to take him back to Earth.
During the Annihilation war, the Silver Surfer again becomes Galactus’s herald to help save the universe from the despot Annihilus. Drax the Destroyer frees the Surfer, who in turn frees Galactus. An enraged Galactus destroys more than half the Annihilation Wave, and Annihilus is defeated. The Silver Surfer leads the world devourer to the populated planet Orbucen, which brings him into conflict with Richard Rider.
He delays the planetary destruction to give the inhabitants more time to evacuate. The Silver Surfer returns to Sakaar in a plan to feed Galactus with the unique “Old Power” which he claims would sate his master’s hunger for thousands of years, sparing many other inhabited worlds.
He is opposed by the Hulk’s son, Skaar , and is enslaved by an obedience disc. The conflict is ended when Skaar’s mother Caiera sacrifices her soul and Old Power as sustenance for Galactus. The battle ended when the Silver Surfer chose to leave his post as herald and guard an Asgardian artifact.
Galactus “tethers” him to Asgard’s location in Oklahoma , resulting in his powers waning the further he travels from Asgard, and grants him the ability to return to human form.
Silver Surfer and Dawn meet Glorian the Maker of Miracles, who plans to rebuild our universe for the heroes to return to after they finish in Battleworld. Glorian has also enlisted the help of the Shaper of Worlds. Dawn agreed to use her memories to restore Earth while Silver Surfer left to restore the rest of the universe, but Silver Surfer unmade Galactus while Dawn unknowingly created another version of Norrin.
The Shaper of Worlds is not happy with the changes. When Silver Surfer was displaced in time, he had an encounter with Knull. I liked Kell a little more and I waited for the signs that I was falling for him, but they never came. I’m still intrigued about his magic and his past though and I’m curious about the way his relationship with Lila will develop.
Simple as that. Schwab had raised her wand, ready to cast the spell that would bewitch me but the words never left her lips. Her plotline was like Red London, vivid and full of possibilities. Her characters like White London, dangerous yet somehow pale and faded. And me, well, I’m Grey London, magicless in the surface but waiting for the magic I know it exists to ignite.

There isn’t just one London. There are, in fact, four cities sharing that name and geographic location, each in a very different plane of existence. The novel takes place in the early s, when magical travel between the different Londons has been severely restricted. Long ago, the place called Black London underwent a massive magical accident — a sort of implosion during which the forces of magic consumed the humans who tried to wield it.
Since then, the doors between the worlds have been sealed. The only ones who can travel from world to world are the blood magicians known as Travellers. The existence of other Londons, we learn, is a closely guarded secret that only the rulers know. We follow Kell’s travels from Grey London to his home, the magical Red London, to the sinister world of White London, ruled by a pair of despot siblings who make Vlad the Impaler look like a nice guy.
At the same time, we meet a young thief of Grey London named Lila Bard, whose life becomes entwined with Kell’s accidentally as they are both plunged into a plot to reawaken magic and tear down the walls between the worlds. Just describing the book makes it seem complicated, and it is an intricate world that V. Schwab has created, but it’s not as confusing as it seems. I highly recommend checking it out if you like fantasy.
The idea of four separate Londons is fascinating, and like all the best fantasies, this novel makes its system of magic seem absolutely plausible. Me — I hope I never get stuck in White London. There were SO many things I had forgotten. Can’t wait to get to book two! Schwab does it again! It amazes me how she continues to get better and better with each book she puts out into the world. Currently, YA books are trying their darnedest to be inclusive, which I personally think is a great step in modern storytelling.
This book took me longer to finish than I would have thought, simply because the writing is so dry and flat. On nearly every page I pendulated from interested to bored and back again like a metronome. The story itself is captivating in parts, but the actual prose has no life. There’s no heart in it at all, and you don’t care about the characters so when they die it’s no big deal.
It sits there listless and says, Our main character is Kell, and he is oh so original. Wait though, he has a completely black eye and does blood magic and there is only one other blood magician in the story so of course they have to face off. The other half of this stone belongs to the villain! By the end, she has a pirate coat and is seen looking at a bunch of ships deciding which one to steal. Especially, trying to remember the differences between the 4 Londons.
Yes, there are 4. If you just want a mindless popcorn book made up of ideas seen elsewhere and are clueless enough to think that one-note tertiary characters are progressive, then you’ll probably love it. Grey London – Magicless, technology driven. Red London – Magic is considered a gift and is practiced with careful determination White London – Magic is cruel, often needs to be stolen and locked into bodies Black London – Magic is hungry and all-consuming, magic apocalypse happened here. All magic, artifacts and people from Black London is banned from the other worlds. Kell frequently travels in and out of the Londons – passing along correspondence, adventuring and smuggling artifacts that last bit is hugely illegal.
After a visit to the cruel king and queen of White London, Kell is given an innocuous black stone and told to bring it to Red London. A bit buzzed and confused, he travels between worlds only to discover that the stone is actually a part of Black London.
By smuggling the stone, Kell committed treason against the crown of Red London his adopted family but more importantly, the black stone contains remnants of that world’s magic – seduction and hunger.
Delilah “Lila” Bard lives in Grey London not that she knows it. It’s the only London without magic and she’s spent her entire life looking for a way out. And then Kell lands on her doorstop. I’d rather die on an adventure than live standing still. Kell immediately struggles with the power of the stone. And he soon realizes that although he may not want it, help will come to him in the form of one very, very stubborn Lila Bard.
I really enjoyed the start to this series! Schwab had such a unique idea – with the four Londons and their varying degrees of magic – and executed it extremely well.
I loved all the details she included – it really made the story come alive. As for the characters Lila at times a bit over the top really balanced out the seriousness and coldness of Kell. The two of them working together had a really natural feel – as evidenced by their free-flowing banter. I was not myself. Audiobook Comments Read by Steven Crossley – and he did a great job. This was a rather well-read audiobook.
I do wish he would’ve had more emotion when it came to his characters but then again, Kell is supposed to be a little stand-offish.

In my opinion this was a really great concept and I lived and breathed for the execution of it. In short, the language did not matter, only the intention did. The mere idea of four different parallel Londons that exist next to each other was more than just intriguing as well. Alone the villains of this book!!!
Ohh and Holland! In the characters section, of course! Tread carefully, my dear friend! A black that ran edge to edge, filling white and iris both. There was nothing human about that eye. It was pure magic. The mark of a blood magician. Of an Antari. They are my kryptonite. Ask Lucien. He is part of the royal family and might seem to have it all, but when push came to shove his true status among the royals was revealed and my heart ached for him. Despite this he still had his own moral code and acted according to it, even if it meant that he was at a disadvantage when he had to face Holland and the Dane twins.
Poor Kell! I had the feeling in some way or another he was figuratively and quite literally bleeding throughout the entire book. But what she saw, she never shared. Kell took her hand and kissed it. But I am afraid of dying here. XD I mean I admire her resilience and stubbornness but I think sometimes she was way too sure of herself and that got her into a lot of trouble.
Also I could relate to her when it came to her choice of clothes. Lila only shrugged. Or perhaps it was the way he seemed to be made more of water and stone than flesh and blood and soul. It was so nice to watch him in action.
XD Especially an intriguing background story. I really wish we would have gotten more of it though. I mean we only got the necessary details to keep the story moving but there are so many things I would have loved to read about.
Hell, this has trouble written all over it! If you ask me Kell basically handed him the means to come back even stronger! Dark things swirled just beneath the smooth black depths. One word whispered through her mind. No, thought Kell as they set off. He suffered long enough. I hope that will change in the next one though.
Also he seems to be unapologetically bi and I live and breathe for characters like that!!! Still, judging by the little we saw and heard of him I can already tell that he loves Kell like a brother and would never do anything to harm him. Also was it just me or did Holland and Rhy actually flirt with each other? Can anyone please tell me how exactly Holland suffered?!!! Apparently the Dane Twins had a reputation of torturing and forcing people to do their will.
What exactly happened before they ascended the White throne?! I really wish we would have gotten more details here, because this really sounded like an interesting story! Either way the Dane twins gave me the creeps.
Astrid even more than her brother Athos. Magic and malice indeed. The first time it was even BDSM style! XD They were very different but for some reason they still worked. Plus they are both Antari. I wonder how their relationship is going to continue.
There is a lot of potential that only needs to be explored. And then Lila brought her free hand to his jaw and tugged his mouth towards hers. The kiss was there and then gone, like one of her smiles.

I’m not afraid of dying. Should have done this long ago. Kell is a magician named Antari. He has the ability to travel between Londons. Kell works for Red London royalty. Or should I say- was adopted by the royalties. But, he has always felt as a possession and not as a family member.
Well, except for the relat “Death comes for everyone. Well, except for the relationship with Rhy- who he claims to be his brother. The setting, the world that Schwab built, is so brilliant and fascinating. The different ways of which London lives, how Kell found names to each London, by the way they function. I especially love the story behind Black London- which is sealed because it was consumed by magic.
Kell meets Lila, a pickpocket in grey London- strong and spunky- a girl who desires to be a pirate, and longs for adventure. I loved both Kell and Lila, and I really loved how they worked together as a team. In fact, the reason they met was because Lila stole the dangerous artifact from Kell. And then- how they found themselves willing to be in a dangerous position just to help each other. Which is amazing, because if you know me, you’ll know that I appreciate love that comes from acquaintance.
And who said there would be romance between them? Even if that seems to happen. And that’s the kind of excitement I like- to wait and see what happens between these two. Kell was likable from the very beginning. Then he realized how strong he really was, and so were we. I also liked Rhy, and I was sad that I didn’t get the chance to really know him as a character.
Holland is another Antari, who belongs to the dangerous, magic-lusting White London. But I was angry with him because he tried to kill Kell, and I fucking love Kell. I do hope Holland will be in the sequels because I want to know more about him. They were strong, smart, sadistic and ruthless. It made me excited about the way they behave, and I was curious how Kell would deal with them.
The beginning was mostly a back story, and it took me a while to get into the vibe of the plot. By the way- Kell has a mysterious coat that has a different look for every place he visits and there are so many- some coats he has never seen, or seen once, and then never again. How amazing is that? I want this coat. T who arrives in London.
This is my sixth month on Goodreads and throughout that period, there are three series that always appeared on my feeds and probably everyone else. E Schwab. Endless arrow pinned me to a wall. I actually liked this book for a while until the underwhelming climax happened.
I love V. There is nothing remotely interesting about the plot. These days, there are a lot of stories and themes that have been overdone but somehow managed to deliver immersive and intriguing plot with great casts of characters and their developments. There are no developments at all for the main characters except Lila. There, I talked about the main characters personality and their development progression throughout this whole book within one sentence.
Seriously, out of everything I ever read, Kell is one of the most boring character of all time. The only thing intriguing about him is his coat and it’s always a bad sign when the clothes is more captivating than the person.
Finally, the last problem I have with the book is the underwhelming magic and climax. If there’s one thing that V. Even all the action scenes in the book are really standard and provides zero intensity. I read the climax sequences with a face and emotion so flat that drinking a hot Chamomile tea will give more reaction to my emotion. Because of these 3 factors that really shine from aDSoM. All 4 version of London have their unique characteristic.
And for the love of all that is holy and sacred not this abomination Despite everything, I still like the book enough to finish it and I still have hope for the future sequels.
It won’t be soon but I will continue with the series eventually with really low expectation. It lacked a touch of brilliance to make the book reach its maximum potential that the concept provides and I sincerely hope the sequels will receive the shade of magic it needs.

So you may notice this book is kind of polarizing within the adult sff community; a little bit And for me personally it is Red London, a land of magic and peace.
White London, a land of turmoil and war and an overuse of magic. And Black London, the land where magic went wrong and burnt out. Only a few people can travel between worlds, and when one of the only two left, Kell, discovers a magic stone that could destroy his world, he and non-magical Lila go on a journey to put it back. Let’s get the problems out of the way – the plotting is a mixed bag. Pro: fast-paced and never boring. This book is a page wild ride.
Con: literally no driving force behind the plot. The characters don’t even have a quest until around page , and it makes the entire book feel just a bit messy. Her smile only sharpened. It was nigh-impossible for me to not be engaged in this story. The writing style is SO GOOD, lyrical and gorgeous and with a really nice flow to it; one of my good blogger friends discussed her sentence structure, and it is so fantastic.
The worldbuilding is creative and intriguing and perhaps best of all, makes a surprising amount of sense for such a wild concept. Also, I would die for these characters. Oddly, they didn’t totally grow on me until like While I could recognize from the beginning that the leads were well-developed and interesting, it took me a while to feel as if I had a concrete concept of who they are. And then we got to the ending and I was screaming in agony at the thought of these characters dying, and I was like “oh shit” and realized how much I love Kell and Lila and Rhy and how much I care about their relationships.
Schwab does a lot of showing, not telling, which makes the character development a bit more subtle; these characters are based off their motivations perhaps even more than their actual traits. Slow start, flawless payoff. I actually want to talk a little more specifically about these characters because when I think back on this series, they are always what come to mind.
Kell is a grumpy child who we love anyway. Lila is a fucking badass genderfluid thief with a soft side and I love her. Rhy is a bisexual prince [literally] who spends half his time dragging people.
Even Holland, the sort-of-villain, is a super dynamic and intriguing character. I love them. They are perhaps two of the most different people ever and they love each other so much it’s beautiful. My nephew kept at me about my criticism of Harry Potter because I hadn’t read the books, well, with all this pandemic mess, I had time to spare so I started with the first book, and read straight through to the seventh. I can say from my perspective as an avid reader, Ms. Rowling is no Agatha Christie, or J.
Tolkien; however she does write compelling stories here that keep the reader’s interest. Many things I found to be predictable which irritated my nephew to no end; but this didn’t matter; she did have enough surprises to keep you guessing.
I read for the joy of reading and can see the attraction of the books–however I also watched each movie after I finished a book and have to say–not that it surprised me at all–the books, including this one, are far better than the movie, even with all the CGI that makes “eye-candy” for the young folks who become Potterheads. Rowling allowed them to completely change whole sections and timelines of the story in the book, when transferred to the screen. In either case, I find this to be the darkest of the series and I personally wouldn’t want a child of mine reading it until they were going on 16 because of language and the depth of rather dark imagery–I know kids today see and hear much worse, but I’m an old foggy and just think this should be reserved for upper teens as it definitely has the potential to create creepy imagery that could traumatize the younger children.
Parents, you be the judge as to whether your kids can handle a lot of death, darkness, eerie scenes and sexual innuendo, never direct at whatever age is best suited for your kids. Now that’s my view as a parent and uncle As a reader, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the series and have my favorites despite having read all seven I need closure and 7 provides that.
For all my criticisms–if you enjoy fantasy, and I love it with some mystery and intrigue– you’ll like these books, and this is one of the best in the entire series. You can’t put a price on that! My ten year old daughter read the entire series within a few months. One of the books is almost pages and she read it in 2 weeks!
Finding 1 book that keeps your child intrigued and helps him or her develop a love for reading is amazing. Rowling gave my daughter 7! Now I’ve been reading the books she’s finished and her younger siblings are eager to read them as well. I enjoyed this book very much. So much is revealed in the character’s thinking and about how events over the whole story are related in subtle and intricate ways.

Lee remained partial to the Surfer, even asking other writers not to use him as a general rule, [15] and with Kirby collaborated on a seminal graphic novel starring the character, the only original story featured in the Marvel Fireside Books series.
After a one-shot by writer-artist John Byrne with scripting by Stan Lee , the Surfer appeared in his second solo ongoing title in Initially written by Steve Englehart , the series was to be set on Earth and one issue was completed under this premise before Marvel agreed to let Englehart remove the long-standing restriction regarding Silver Surfer being imprisoned on Earth.
This first issue was shelved and a brand new first issue was written, to set up this plot twist; the original first issue would ultimately be reprinted in Marvel Fanfare The series marked the first Silver Surfer stories not written by Stan Lee, a fact which Lee was openly unhappy about. He explained:. I felt that it was kind of nice for me to have been the only writer of the Silver Surfer, so I felt a little bit disappointed when somebody else did it.

The series is an extension of a Guardians of the Galaxy storyline which the Surfer was sucked into a black hole and ejected into unfamiliar space territory.
This run follows the Surfer as he traverses the spaceways on a journey back home. Facing the destruction of his world by planet-consuming Galactus , Radd bargains with the cosmic being. In return for the safety of Zenn-La and his lover, Shalla-Bal , Radd pledges to seek out planets for the world devourer to consume as his herald.
Galactus imbues him with a portion of the Power Cosmic , transforming him into the Silver Surfer. Radd serves Galactus for an unspecified amount of time. Eventually, the Surfer summons his master to Earth. Touched by their nobility, he rebels against Galactus, who is eventually driven off.
Before he leaves, he confines the Surfer to Earth with an invisible barrier that affects only him. During his exile, the Surfer fights numerous villains, including Doctor Doom , who wants his Power Cosmic, and Mephisto , who wants his soul. The Surfer’s only ally during these trials is a physicist by the name of Al B. Harper, who eventually sacrifices himself to save the world from the Stranger.
Banding together with the Hulk and Namor during these wanderings, the Surfer forms the “Titans Three”, a group dedicated to battling evil on Earth. The Surfer finally pierces Galactus’s barrier with the aid of Reed Richards and temporarily escapes Earth.
He discovers, though, that his homeworld has been ravaged by Galactus and Shalla-Bal has been abducted by Mephisto and taken to Earth. Even though it means trapping himself once more, the Surfer returns to Earth to battle and defeat Mephisto. Before being vanquished, Mephisto sends Shalla-Bal back to Zenn-La, but the Surfer manages to endow her with a portion of his Power Cosmic, which she uses to revitalize the plant life of their ravaged homeworld.
After the Surfer aids the Fantastic Four against Galactus’s latest herald Terrax , [44] The Surfer eventually pierces Galactus’s barrier by acting on a suggestion of trying to pass through on a spaceship instead of via his own power on his surfboard. He also makes peace with Galactus by rescuing current herald Nova from the Skrulls. Galactus declares the Surfer’s exile ended. Embroiled in fresh hostilities between the interstellar Kree and Skrull empires, the Surfer also intervenes in a series of plots by the Elders of the Universe , who plan to become supremely powerful by destroying Galactus and the universe with him.
The Surfer thwarts this plot with the aid of his new love interest, Mantis , the Earth-born cosmic heroine also known as the “Celestial Madonna”. The Surfer repeatedly battles space-born menaces, the chief of whom is Thanos, who attempts to kill half the life in the universe using the omnipotent Infinity Gauntlet. He convinces Galactus to restore it, [53] but once Galactus has done so, the Surfer is overcome with grief until he is able to forgive himself.
The Surfer returns home to Zenn-La to find that the planet has vanished, and learns it was actually destroyed in the s Earth time by the entity known as the Other. Zenn-La and its people which the Surfer repeatedly encountered since leaving Galactus’s service were actually reproductions, created by Galactus so that the Surfer would have a home to return to.
He later regains his personality during a time-travel adventure and sharing a romance with Alicia Masters. Silver Surfer temporarily bonds with and is controlled by the Carnage symbiote , which is seeking revenge for the destruction of its homeworld. Later, the Surfer works with the alien Annunaki race to gather and protect some of Earth’s most extraordinarily gifted children.
During his travels, the Surfer is captured by a portal of the Sakaar Empire. Left weakened and vulnerable by his trip through the portal, the Surfer is subdued and implanted with an obedience disk to ensure he remains loyal to them. Fighting as a gladiator and believed to be the fabled ‘Sakaarson’ due to his appearance , the Surfer is finally forced to face the Hulk along with his Warbound.
Through teamwork and distraction, the Hulk is eventually able to destroy the Surfer’s obedience disk. The Hulk and several other slaves and gladiators are freed when the Surfer uses the Power Cosmic to remove their own obedience disks and give them a way out of the arena, although the Hulk declines the Surfer’s offer to take him back to Earth.
During the Annihilation war, the Silver Surfer again becomes Galactus’s herald to help save the universe from the despot Annihilus. Drax the Destroyer frees the Surfer, who in turn frees Galactus.
An enraged Galactus destroys more than half the Annihilation Wave, and Annihilus is defeated. The Silver Surfer leads the world devourer to the populated planet Orbucen, which brings him into conflict with Richard Rider. He delays the planetary destruction to give the inhabitants more time to evacuate.
The Silver Surfer returns to Sakaar in a plan to feed Galactus with the unique “Old Power” which he claims would sate his master’s hunger for thousands of years, sparing many other inhabited worlds. He is opposed by the Hulk’s son, Skaar , and is enslaved by an obedience disc. The conflict is ended when Skaar’s mother Caiera sacrifices her soul and Old Power as sustenance for Galactus.
The battle ended when the Silver Surfer chose to leave his post as herald and guard an Asgardian artifact. Galactus “tethers” him to Asgard’s location in Oklahoma , resulting in his powers waning the further he travels from Asgard, and grants him the ability to return to human form. Silver Surfer and Dawn meet Glorian the Maker of Miracles, who plans to rebuild our universe for the heroes to return to after they finish in Battleworld. Glorian has also enlisted the help of the Shaper of Worlds.
Dawn agreed to use her memories to restore Earth while Silver Surfer left to restore the rest of the universe, but Silver Surfer unmade Galactus while Dawn unknowingly created another version of Norrin. The Shaper of Worlds is not happy with the changes. When Silver Surfer was displaced in time, he had an encounter with Knull. Gathering the energy from the cosmos, Silver Surfer managed to defeat Knull.
During the ” King in Black ” storyline, Silver Surfer passes by the planets that were ravaged by Knull. Knull reels in pain and Eddie Brock is chosen to be the new Captain Universe. Through the God of Light, Silver Surfer assumes a chrome form and turns his surfboard into a sword while Knull transforms his armor into one that would enable him to combat Silver Surfer.
Just then, Venom appears having been transformed into Captain Universe stating that he will handle Knull for them. With their weapons separated from the battle axe form following Knull’s death, Thor and Silver Surfer noted that things will not be back to normal soon. The Silver Surfer wields the Power Cosmic , granting him superhuman strength, endurance, and senses and the ability to absorb and manipulate the universe’s ambient energy.

For there to be betrayal, there would have to have been trust first. The Capitol uses the Games as a way to demonstrate the sheer helplessness of the other Districts and to keep the population cowed and in fear.
When Katniss’s sister twelve-year-old Prim is chosen as this year’s competitor, Katniss volunteers to take her place. Peeta, a boy from the “richer” side of District 12 is chosen as the male representative. I’m more than just a piece in their Games. Soon, she and Peeta are whisked away to the Capitol – a place of incredible wealth and heartbreaking cruelity. And while Katniss has sworn to come back to her sister, she really has to wonder, what will be left of her if she returns.
Stay alive. To be fair, this was one of the very first YA series I read, so every time I re-read it, I am just overwhelmed with nostalgia. But, when I take off my rose-tinted glasses, I still think it’s a pretty solid series. The characters are really well-done.
I love how Katniss’s motivation is both pure and ruthlessness – and her personality isn’t tainted with over-the-top self-sacrificing eyerollingly awful simpering mess that I see in quite a few of the newer YA series.

Just make sure to check the pages as soon as you receive the book. My nephew kept at me about my criticism of Harry Potter because I hadn’t read the books, well, with all this pandemic mess, I had time to spare so I started with the first book, and read straight through to the seventh.
I can say from my perspective as an avid reader, Ms. Rowling is no Agatha Christie, or J. Tolkien; however she does write compelling stories here that keep the reader’s interest. Many things I found to be predictable which irritated my nephew to no end; but this didn’t matter; she did have enough surprises to keep you guessing.
I read for the joy of reading and can see the attraction of the books–however I also watched each movie after I finished a book and have to say–not that it surprised me at all–the books, including this one, are far better than the movie, even with all the CGI that makes “eye-candy” for the young folks who become Potterheads.
Rowling allowed them to completely change whole sections and timelines of the story in the book, when transferred to the screen. In either case, I find this to be the darkest of the series and I personally wouldn’t want a child of mine reading it until they were going on 16 because of language and the depth of rather dark imagery–I know kids today see and hear much worse, but I’m an old foggy and just think this should be reserved for upper teens as it definitely has the potential to create creepy imagery that could traumatize the younger children.
Parents, you be the judge as to whether your kids can handle a lot of death, darkness, eerie scenes and sexual innuendo, never direct at whatever age is best suited for your kids. Now that’s my view as a parent and uncle As a reader, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the series and have my favorites despite having read all seven I need closure and 7 provides that.
For all my criticisms–if you enjoy fantasy, and I love it with some mystery and intrigue– you’ll like these books, and this is one of the best in the entire series. You can’t put a price on that! My ten year old daughter read the entire series within a few months.
One of the books is almost pages and she read it in 2 weeks! Finding 1 book that keeps your child intrigued and helps him or her develop a love for reading is amazing. Rowling gave my daughter 7! Now I’ve been reading the books she’s finished and her younger siblings are eager to read them as well. I enjoyed this book very much. So much is revealed in the character’s thinking and about how events over the whole story are related in subtle and intricate ways.

The character was created by writer Steve Gerber and artist Val Mayerik. Howard the Duck first appeared in Adventure into Fear 19 cover-dated Dec. Howard’s adventures are generally social satires , while a few are parodies of genre fiction with a metafictional awareness of the medium. The book is existentialist , and its main joke, according to Gerber, is that there is no joke: ” It’s not supposed to be an existential experience.
Howard the Duck was portrayed by Ed Gale and voiced by Chip Zien in the critically and commercially unsuccessful self-titled film. Gerber wrote 27 issues of the series for the most part ditching the horror parodies , illustrated by a variety of artists, beginning with Frank Brunner. Coyote gets run over by a steamroller, the result is a pancake-flat coyote who can be expected to snap back to three dimensions within moments; if Howard gets run over by a steamroller, the result is blood on asphalt.
I would see something in my mind, and that is what you would draw! I’ve never had that experience with another artist before or since. Sporting the slogan “Get Down, America! Presidential campaign of , [7] [8] and led to Howard the Duck allegedly receiving thousands of write-in votes in the actual election. Marvel attempted a spin-off with a short-lived Howard the Duck newspaper comic strip from to , at first written by Gerber and drawn by Colan and Mayerik, [10] later written by Marv Wolfman and drawn by Alan Kupperberg.
Gerber gained a degree of creative autonomy when he became the comic series’ editor in addition to his usual writing duties. With issue 16, unable to meet the deadline for his regular script, Gerber substituted an entire issue of text pieces and illustrations satirizing his own difficulties as a writer.
The Walt Disney Company contacted Marvel in over concerns that the visual design of Howard infringed on their trademark for Donald Duck. Marvel agreed to a redesign of the character by Disney artists. A key feature of the redesign was that the character would wear pants. In , Gerber was removed from the newspaper strip and the comic-book series due to chronic problems with deadlines. The final episode of the newspaper strip was published on October 29, Issue 31 May of the comic-book series announced on its letters page that it would be the final issue of Howard the Duck as a color comic.
Marvel then relaunched the series that year as a bimonthly magazine, with scripts by Mantlo, art by Colan and Michael Golden and unrelated backup features by others. The magazine was canceled after nine issues. On August 29, , after learning of Marvel’s efforts to license Howard for use in film and broadcast media, Steve Gerber filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Marvel corporate parent Cadence Industries and other parties, alleging that he was the sole owner of the character.
On November 5, , Judge David Kenyon approved the motion and dismissed the case. The only new story featuring the character between and appeared in Bizarre Adventures 34 Scripted by Steven Grant , it featured a suicidal Howard being put through a parody of It’s a Wonderful Life. The original comic book series reappeared with issue 32 January It featured a story that had been written by Grant four years earlier. Howard co-creator Val Mayerik co-plotted the story and provided the art.
It was released alongside an adaptation of the Howard the Duck feature film, which was published in Marvel Super Special 41 November and a three-issue comic-book series. The character was again living with Beverly Switzler, now working as a rent-a- ninja. How they got back together was never explained. Beverly was not involved in the story, in which She-Hulk takes Howard on a trip through several dimensions with a theoretical physicist from Empire State University.
He had the idea to create an unofficial crossover between the two issues, where the characters would meet momentarily in the shadows, but which would not affect either story.
Soon after, Gerber discovered that Howard was scheduled to appear in Ghost Rider vol. Gerber was not pleased with this development, and changed the “unofficial crossover” somewhat. As Savage Dragon and Destroyer Duck escape the warehouse, they reveal that they rescued the “real” Howard and Beverly, while Spider-Man left with two of the clones.
Howard has his feathers dyed green, and is renamed “Leonard the Duck”, and Beverly has her hair dyed black and is renamed “Rhonda Martini”. Featuring several familiar Howard the Duck characters, the series, like the original one, parodied a wide range of other comics and pop culture figures, but with considerably stronger language and sexual content than what would have been allowable 25 years earlier. The series has Doctor Bong causing Howard to go through multiple changes of form, principally into a mouse as a parody of Mickey Mouse , in retaliation for the Disney-mandated redesign , and entering a chain of events parodying comics such as Witchblade , Preacher and several others, with Howard ultimately having a conversation with God in Hell.
Howard had cameo appearances in She-Hulk vol. In , he returned in Howard the Duck vol. This series was rated for ages 9 and up, though one issue was published with a Marvel Zombies tie-in cover with a parental advisory claim. In November , Marvel announced an ongoing series starting in March featuring Howard as a private investigator on Earth. The creative team consisted of writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Joe Quinones.
This led to a reboot produced by the same creative team starting with Howard the Duck vol. Howard’s first appearance in comics is when he is abruptly abducted from his home planet by an unseen force and randomly dropped into the Florida Everglades by the demon-lord Thog the Nether-Spawn.
He meets the Man-Thing , who had been attacked by Korrek of Katharta, and the three of them are confronted by warriors of the Congress of Realities. They then travel to the realm of Therea and destroy Thog the Nether-Spawn. Howard then accidentally falls off the inter-dimensional stepping stones that the group were traveling on [24] and materializes in Cleveland, Ohio, where he battles Garko the Man-Frog.
Howard also briefly encounters and kills a vampiric cow named Bessie the Hellcow. Howard makes friends with an artists’ model named Beverly Switzler and a bizarre series of encounters follow. He battles Pro-Rata , the cosmic accountant, then meets Spider-Man at the end of the battle. Howard and Beverly hit the road, seeking shelter in a gothic mansion where they battle a girl named Patsy and her giant, animated-to-life gingerbread man.
The Beaver falls to his death in a battle with Howard. Unfortunately, the bus’ passengers are all believers in various weird cults, and try to interest Howard in them. His seatmates are Winda Wester and the Kidney Lady, a woman who believes that the soul of a person lives in their kidneys and attempts to stop anything she sees as “anti-kidney health. There he meets Daimon Hellstrom, and is briefly possessed by Hellstrom’s demonic soul, becoming the new Son of Satan. Later, while on the S.
Damned , a cruise ship returning from scenic Bagmom, Howard and Beverly are taken captive by Lester Verde. Verde had known Beverly in college and had a crush on her and had assumed the identity of the supervillain Doctor Bong , [38] who illegally marries Beverly against her will and transforms Howard into a human. After escaping back to New York and being restored to his natural form, Howard is hired as a dishwasher by Beverly’s uncle, Lee Switzler.
Korrek pilots the ship the Epoch Weasel and drops Howard back off at Cleveland before he and their allies fly away. Howard is later kidnapped by the Ringmaster and his Circus of Crime.
Winda is abandoned by Paul and Iris and Paul is shot and left in a coma. Writer Bill Mantlo, beginning with issue 30, returned the series to its former status quo, bringing Beverly back into the picture and having her divorce Doctor Bong. Howard’s creator Steve Gerber, who left the series after issue 27, originally intended for Beverly and Bong’s marriage to be lasting and for Beverly to be written out of the series from that point on.
Howard and Beverly’s friend Paul, who had ended up in a coma after he had previously been shot by the Ringmaster, awakens from his coma and is released from the hospital.
Beverly’s uncle Lee brings everyone back to Cleveland and employs Howard as a cab driver, while Paul, back to being a somnambulist after his release from the hospital, becomes Winda’s boyfriend. Howard dons a suit of “Iron Duck” armor made by Claude Starkowitz, a man who has delusions of being related to Tony Stark and dreams of being the personal armorer to Iron Man , and battles Doctor Bong in the final issue of the original 70s Howard the Duck series issue On a later occasion, She-Hulk accidentally pulls Howard though a cosmic wormhole along with theoretical physicist Brent Wilcox and they are able to prevent other universes from crowding out Earth During this time, Howard meets a character called the Critic, travels to a dimension known as the Baloneyverse and again battles a group called the Band of the Bland, whom he had previously battled with the Defenders.
During the fight, Howard and Beverly get stuck in a warehouse full of anthropomorphic ducks, briefly meeting the Savage Dragon and Destroyer Duck. Parker and Reilly leave the warehouse believing that they have the correct versions of Howard and Beverly with them. The disoriented dinosaur attempts to eat Howard, but spits him out when shot with John Blaze ‘s hellfire gun. Howard says that he relates to the pair being trapped in a world they never made before wandering off.
This origin traces the source of these dimensions to be projections from Franklin’s mind. Throughout the course of the adventure, Howard has a romance with Tana Nile, culminating in a kiss, after which he apologizes and tells her of his attachment to Beverly. While Man-Thing becomes a self-appointed guardian to Franklin Richards, Howard goes off on his own and is captured by the Cult of Entropy , who wrap him in swaddling clothes.
The cult wants Howard because he has part of the Nexus of All Realities , which shattered during Heroes Reborn , inside of him. Man-Thing then enters Howard’s mouth, and Howard vomits him back out with the fragment, but Man-Thing is left desiccated and practically dead.
Howard sets the Man-Thing down in the water, and he revives during Howard’s conversation with Namor. Once he sees that the Man-Thing is alive and well, he bids Namor farewell and says that he is returning to Cleveland.
Years later, back with Beverly, he undergoes further shapeshifting experiences after an accident at a chemical facility of Doctor Bong’s. Beverly is hired by Bong’s Globally Branded Content Corporation, which manufactures boy bands from protein vats based on the sexual arousal of a focus group of gay men. Attempting to destroy an escapee whom Beverly has taken in, Bong inadvertently knocks Howard into a vat, which changes him, unstably, into a rat.
Verde then goes to the press and claims that his building was attacked by Osama el-Barka “Osama the Duck” in Arabic. Howard and Beverly are sent back on the road after the junkyard office where they are living is destroyed by a S.
One of the officers on the case is the same beat cop who mistook Howard for a mutant many years before. Suzy is the inheritor of the doucheblade , which starts to take her over when she wears an enchanted bracelet.
In a skirmish, the bracelet is caught by Howard causing him to be the wielder of the doucheblade. The doucheblade causes its holder to grow enormous bare breasts and armor in a parody of Witchblade , and, possessed by this, Howard kills the male lover of a businessman who works with Verde as he and Verde break into Suzy’s house. Arriving at the Boarding House of Mystery, Howard and Beverly encounter Cain and Abel , the latter with a rock stuck in his head that allows him only moments of lucidity.
There, they are granted their every wish, including Howard’s return to his true form, and Beverly never being poor again, and meet parodies of John Constantine , Wesley Dodds , the Endless , Spider Jerusalem , and Gerber’s own Nevada called Utah , all characters from DC Comics ‘ Vertigo imprint. The downside to the House is that everyone staying there gets their every wish; so Che Guevara can have his revolution, but someone else can easily slaughter him.
Upon leaving the House of Mystery, Howard is once again transformed into an anthropomorphic mouse. It is revealed that Iprah has been merged with an experiment by the Angel Gabriel called Deuteronomy, intended to replace God, because God has been spending all his time in a bar in Hell since Deuteronomy is a creature half-id and half-superego, while Iprah is an all-ego promoter of self-indulgent pop psychology. Considering her dangerous, Gabriel sends the cherub Thrasher to resurrect Sigmund Freud, whose cigar blasts out half of Thrasher’s brains being immortal, this just makes him act drunk.
Iprah destroys Freud, but Howard blasts her with the cigar, separating her from Deuteronomy. Puffing on the cigar, Howard disintegrates and arrives in Hell. Sometime later, Howard attempts to register under the Superhero Registration Act during the superhero Civil War , but learns his socially disrupted life has created so many bureaucratic headaches that the government’s official policy is that Howard does not exist. This lack of government oversight delights him: “For the rest of my life, no more parking tickets, or taxes, or jury duty.
Heck, I couldn’t even vote if I wanted to! After he defeats the supervillain M. Howard the Duck is briefly seen as part of the superpowered army gathered to battle invading Skrull forces.
During the Fear Itself storyline, Howard forms a team called the Fearsome Four with She-Hulk, Frankenstein’s Monster and Nighthawk to stop the Man-Thing when he goes on a rampage in Manhattan, due to the fear and chaos he senses on the citizens. They later discover a plot by Psycho-Man to use the Man-Thing’s volatile empathy to create a weapon.
They promote S. Jonah Jameson. Spider-Man later interrupts a S. Spidey escapes with Howard and breaks his brainwashing when Beverly is threatened. Howard quickly explains S. During the Fear Itself storyline, Howard forms a team called the Fearsome Four with She-Hulk, Frankenstein’s Monster and Nighthawk to stop the Man-Thing when he goes on a rampage in Manhattan, due to the fear and chaos he senses on the citizens.
They later discover a plot by Psycho-Man to use the Man-Thing’s volatile empathy to create a weapon. They promote S. Jonah Jameson. Spider-Man later interrupts a S. Spidey escapes with Howard and breaks his brainwashing when Beverly is threatened.
Howard quickly explains S. As Spider-Man publicly announces his long-standing support for S. Howard is able to break through to Beverly, reminding her of their past together. The Supreme S. Spidey attacks the S. Howard states that he believes S. Because of his experience with zombie-infested worlds and his leadership of Machine Man, Howard is chosen as the leader of, as he dubs them, the Ducky Dozen. The team is composed of him, several Golden Age heroes, Dum-Dum Dugan , and Battlestar , who is also a veteran of a zombie incident.
Upon entering Earth, the Ducky Dozen fight hordes of zombie Nazis and Asgardians , but suffer grave losses as the team’s members are either killed or zombified during the battle.
After successfully accomplishing their mission, Howard, Dugan, Taxi Taylor and Battlestar are the only members to survive and return to Earth along with the Riveter, the only survivor of Earth’s resistance team, the Suffragists.
They beat the horde back with nothing but a broken sword, a rubber chicken with nails in it and a gun that shoots bees. After the death of Uatu the Watcher and the activation of the secrets buried in his eye, Howard discovers that he has the potential to be the most intelligent being in Duckworld.
After evading a squirrel while driving, he is thrown flying from his vehicle but uses his intellect to calculate a way to land safely in a nearby dumpster. Howard returns to his business as a private eye, working in the same building as She-Hulk, in Brooklyn. One of his first new clients is Jonathan Richards, who hires Howard to retrieve a necklace stolen by the Black Cat. With the help of Tara Tam, his new friend and assistant, Howard manages to recover the necklace.
However, on his way to give it back to Richards, he finds himself kidnapped by the Collector and allied with the Guardians of the Galaxy to escape the villain, who was attempting to add Howard to his collection of rare space objects and entities.
Upon returning to Earth, Howard is robbed by May Parker , Spider-Man’s aunt, and later re-encounters the Ringmaster, who is revealed to have brainwashed the elderly into committing robberies.
After recovering the necklace for a third time, Howard is approached by Richards in the middle of his fight against the Ringmaster and Richards reveals himself to be Talos the Untamed, who reveals that the necklace was part of a marginally powerful item known as the Abundant Glove.
With help from Doctor Strange, Howard and Tara locate the final piece of the Abundant Glove, but are unable to put it back together when Talos grabs it and proceeds to use it to wreak havoc on the city. Talos is confronted by numerous heroes while Howard and Tara take cover. Howard is able to point out that Tara, who is revealed to possess shapeshifting powers similar to that of a Skrull, could help him defeat Talos.
Talos is later apprehended by the Fantastic Four and everything returns to normal. Howard has no superhuman powers, but he is skilled in the martial art known as Quak-Fu, enough to defeat, or at least to hold his own against, far larger opponents. He has shown some degree of mystic talent in the past, to the point that Stephen Strange taught some spells to Howard and even offered to train him, but Howard declined. On one occasion, Howard used a suit of powered armor known as the “Iron Duck” armor designed by Claude Starkowitz.
Besides its property as body armor, the suit was equipped with foot-mounted leaping coils, a chest-mounted searchlight, and flamethrowers in both arms. Howard the Duck is a three-foot-tall anthropomorphic duck. He generally wears a tie and shirt and is almost always found smoking a cigar.
Originally, like many cartoon ducks, he wore no pants; Disney threatened legal action due to Howard’s resemblance to Donald Duck , [89] and Marvel redesigned that aspect of the character by writing into the script that Howard was the target of anti-nudity protests, and was forced to do business with “Wally Sidney”, a failed cartoonist who made his fortune through a chain of conservative clothing retailers known as “Sidney World”.
Howard tries on various outfits, including ones akin to Donald Duck’s sailor uniform and Uncle Scrooge ‘s coat and top hat , before settling on his new attire of a business suit complete with trousers. Although Howard sulks that he has lost, Beverly reassures him that she does not want him to be a victim of a mob, and loves him no matter what he wears. Howard has an irritable and cynical attitude towards the often bizarre events around him; he feels there is nothing special about him except that he is a duck, and though he has no goals other than seeking comfort and to be left alone, he is often dragged into dangerous adventures simply because he is visibly unusual.
His series’ tagline, “Trapped in a world he never made”, played off the genre trappings of s science fiction. His near-constant companion and occasional girlfriend is former art model and Cleveland native Beverly Switzler. Like Howard, Beverly wants an ordinary life but is frequently singled out for her appearance, though as a beautiful woman rather than a duck.
Howard has worked with Spider-Man and the Man-Thing on various occasions. Howard found himself on Earth due to a shift in the “Cosmic Axis” from a world similar to Earth, but where there are “more ducks” and “apes don’t talk. In , Gerber dismissed this idea, calling it “very pedestrian” and ‘comic-booky’ — in the worst sense of the term. Gerber later depicted his character Destroyer Duck as existing in such a world. His antagonists who usually appear in a single story each are often parodies of science fiction , fantasy , or horror characters, as well as frequent parodies of political figures and organizations.
The chief recurring villain, Lester Verde, better known as Doctor Bong — modeled on Doctor Doom and writers Bob Greene and Lester Bangs — is a former tabloid reporter who has the power to “reorder reality” by smashing himself on the bell -shaped helmet on his head and his main goal is to marry Beverly. Beverly eventually agreed to marry him to save Howard from Bong’s evil experimentation, but the two were divorced shortly thereafter.
Doctor Bong would reappear in issues of She-Hulk and Deadpool in the mids. Other recurring villains include the Kidney Lady, an older woman who has been convinced by her former lover that the soul is in the kidneys and attacks anything she sees as a threat to them, and Reverend Jun Moon Yuc and his Yuccies, a parody of Reverend Sun Myung Moon and the Unification Church “Moonies”. Another important villain was the organization S. Omega the Unknown appeared to him in a dream, as did Spider-Man and the founding members of the rock group Kiss on other occasions.
In the miniseries, as a mocking gesture toward Disney’s mascot Mickey Mouse and as a reference to a previous lawsuit with the company over Howard’s similarity to Donald Duck, Howard was turned into various other animals, but primarily appeared in the series as an anthropomorphic mouse.
This character is featured in its own one-shot comic book which like almost all of the other Amalgam Comics “falsely” implied that the one-shot was a continuation of multiple other, pre-existing Lobo The Duck stories. In the letters page of Bat-Thing 1, there was mention of a fictional upcoming ‘special issue’ featuring Howard the Mxyzptlk, presumably a merging of Howard with Mister Mxyzptlk. An alternate version of Howard the Duck becomes infected with the zombie plague, and eats the brains of the alternate-Ash that is native to the zombie version of the Marvel Universe.
In the Marvel Comics 2 universe, Howard is seen as a blindfold-wearing martial arts teacher, a reference harkening back to his mastery of “Quack Fu” in the original s series. Duck is the President of the United States. In a parody of the Spider-Verse event, Howard and Leo Fitz team up with a group of Howards from across the Multiverse who collectively call themselves the Legion of Howards. This version of Howard is brought to Cleveland by a laser spectroscope experiment gone awry and befriends rock singer Beverly Switzler.
Plans have also occurred for Howard the Duck to star in his own film. In , Rob Zombie claimed that he had pitched a Howard the Duck film to Marvel, but was turned down. He said that while there were several comics characters he loved, he was “not making films of them all”. In addition, Howard can briefly be seen in the background of the Collector’s welcome video in the attraction’s queue. Between June 6, and October 29, , Howard the Duck appeared in a syndicated daily comic strip that comic strip historian Allan Holtz has described as having low distribution and that was eventually replaced by the Incredible Hulk comic strip.

A total of eleven story arcs, as well as a number of single-joke strips, constitute the individual strips that were printed.

Gerber was fired from the strip in early over chronic problems with deadlines. In November , the first of a projected eight-issue series reprinting the entire strip was published by John Zawadzki. For example, The Sun Also Rises is one of my favorite books in the whole world, even though it does not contain any women who resonate with my experience of humans. And I don’t think it’s necessarily bad that I can enjoy stories where women are only fleshlights, as long as I can still be whoever I want to be without a positive role model. I think it’s good to enjoy stories and take what we can get from them, and so I don’t regret that I love The Sun Also Rises.
In seeing some male reactions to The Hunger Games , I am reminded that most men do not identify with female protagonists the way women have been trained to identify with male protagonists. This seems like a huge disadvantage for men to be in, to me, and if you are a man reading this review, I would ask you to check out your bookshelves.
How many female authors are on your shelves? How many of the books those authors wrote have no central male character? If you have a minute after that, check the shelves of a woman you are friends with and see how many of her books were written by men or have no central female character. Odds are the results will be pretty different. Katniss is strong and broken, and powerful in her brokenness. Masculinity does not have to mean emotional cowardice.
Hopefully, we never think of our primary purpose in life, in the way so many stories think of it, as making penises erect.
Hopefully, we never think of ourselves as gadgets that are super fun for other people. Yes, it is also a poignant critique of reality TV and Western callousness about the catastrophes caused by industrialization in the developing world, but that, too, resonates with me in many ways because of its remarkably feminine voice.
It absolutely makes sense to me that this book is not for everyone because of its violence, but I still think that it is objectively important because it shows a perspective that seems authentically feminine to me — that talks like a girl, not like a sexy, fancy gadget. The Hunger Games is one that does, and it does so in way that is beautiful and important. I want to die as myself. I don’t want them to change me in there.

You’re the one who wasn’t paying attention. Of course, I loved Peeta! How can “I don’t know how to say it exactly. How can I not? He is perfect! But Katniss? She is so strong and bad-ass but she always misunderstands Peeta! It’s so obvious that he loves her but she is in denial! She is so stupid!! And when she realizes his feelings, she just hurt him! Let’s start from the beginning! What is Hunger Games? Every year, one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 were selected from each of the twelve districts as tributes, who train for a week and then are sent into an arena to fight to the death.
Only one tribute can win the games. This competition is showed to television to be seen by all citizens. So, Katniss’ little sister, Prim, is selected for the games, but Katniss took her place to save her. I volunteer as tribute! He protected her but I will admit she protected him as well! She risked her life to get the medicine needed to heal his leg. But how can she not see that he is madly in love with her? I loved it when he told her about her singing for the music class, that’s when Peeta realized he was in love with her when he saw that the birds were listening like they did for her father.
And right when your song ended, I knew – just like your mother – I was a goner,” Peeta says. Very deep. He is her best friend! At the beginning, she said that she never saw him that way and now what? She is confusing me. Please, not love triangle again!! I liked Gale but no! He won the Hunger Games of his time. He is also Katniss’ and Peeta’s mentor. It seems at first that he doesn’t like Katniss very much but at the Hunger Games he helped her more than he helped Peeta.
He always supported her in his way. She was the year-old female tribute from District I really liked that Katniss allied with Rue. They were amazing together. But Rue died. I understand only one can win our case two but I felt so sad when she died. Not only her though. A lot innocent kids die because of the Capitol. It’s not fair. So katniss and Peeta can be allies.
But when all the other tributes died it was announced that the rule they said early has been canceled. I was so angry! They did it on purpose. She is so stupid. He didn’t want to fight her and she thought that he could kill her. But it was a trick.

I don’t know why I didn’t when it was a series that completely took over my life for a short while. But recently I’ve been thinking about posting something in this review space and after just watching the second film which I think was amazing and better than the first , now seems like as good a time as any to talk about why I love Katniss and nearly everything about this series. I gave this book four stars back in and I’m going to leave that rating as it is because it’s an indicator of my thoughts at the time though they slightly differ now – thoughts which were influenced by having just finished the fantastic, horrifying, brutal and unforgettable Battle Royale manga series.
I don’t think it was the best time for myself and Katniss to find one another when I had so much beautiful insanity to compare the book to, but it still managed to have such an effect on me that I instantly told every friend and family member to read it. Coming back to this now after having spent the last couple of years being bombarded with dystopian YA, I appreciate what Collins has achieved a whole lot more.
I appreciate the strength of Katniss as a heroine who commands our attention and holds our love whilst still being what some would consider unlikable; I appreciate the balance of beauty and horror that Collins delivers on every page, treating us constantly to both the darkest despair and rays of hope; and I also – amazingly – appreciate the love triangle. Love triangles seem to have chased me and hunted me down with every YA read I picked up over the last two or three years – my dislike for romance instantly becoming doubled by the introduction of yet another boy with beautiful eyes.
But Katniss, Peeta and Gale worked for me. They convinced me, held my interest and made me cry. The love triangle worked because it’s outcome wasn’t obvious, because we all wondered and hoped and worried. Because, either way, I was always going to be half happy and half sad. Katniss still remains for me everything that a female protagonist should be. Or a female hero, at least. She fights for the ones she loves, she’s brave and doesn’t need to be saved. But neither is she a one-dimensional smiling poster-version of a heroine.
She falls, she fails, people get hurt because of her and she has to live with that. We love her and yet she’s antisocial, awkward and moody.
She loves other people with all her heart but she’s not much of a team player. In short: she’s a complex portrait of a young woman that doesn’t fall into any neatly defined boxes or categories. Now, perhaps, authors have since tried to recreate her. But she’s still one of the first and best. I know another review of this book isn’t needed.
I know you’ve all probably read it anyway. Or never will. But this isn’t really for anyone else; it’s a reminder to myself of why this book deserves its hype and why I need to remember to come back to it again and again between the new and hopefully amazing YA books I’ll be reading in the future. I feel pretty safe in saying that if this isn’t still my favorite book of the year when next January rolls around, that I’ll eat a hat.
As soon as I finished reading it, I turned around and read it a 2nd time, which I’ve never done before in my life. It’s got some very meaty issues to chew on, not the least of which is reality TV taken to extremes. I will miss Katniss until I can read about her again. What more could you possibly ask for out of a book? It doesn’t actually come out until October , but if you can get your hands on an ARC, definitely do!
I think that the violence in this will be easier for kids to take, since they probably won’t see it quite as clearly as an adult will. None of it is particularly graphic, but it is definitely brutal. This is on the edge of too dark for me, which is my favorite kind of book. There aren’t many writers who can push it right to the edge for me without going over Zusak comes to mind immediately , but Collins is definitely one of them.
OK, I’ll stop gushing. I may have to re-write this review when I get some perspective. Still my definite favorite book of the year, but all the typos in the finished book were pretty disappointing. I’ve had 2 teenaged boys at my library read this on my recommendation, and both of them came back asking me for more books like it really there isn’t anything. May-June I’m reading this for the 4th time, with my younger son, who’s finishing up 5th grade.
Still as good as ever!! Can’t wait for the movie!! I’ve seen the movie twice so far, and definitely liked it better the 2nd time, when it didn’t have to try to be my favorite book. I know there are major story types out there, ones that are repeated over and over again. Shakespeare retold different ways.
The bible reinterpreted to 2,, varieties of tales FEED felt utterly original. If it’s going to be about “the future” we don’t know about, make it original. In my mind dystopia novels survive on “idea” more than “excecution” and while the execution of this was beautiful, the idea was hardly new.
In Battle Royal short explanation of BR plot: 40 students put on island forced to kill each other and winner is set for life and put on TV etc There are so many other similarities, from the ways the gamemakers manipulate, to the ways the media encourages, to one character having a fever and the other taking care of them with soup.
There are even “career” battle royal players. In BR you see the emotions before and after someone is killed, their last thoughts, the feeling of the person who killed.
It’s actually really beautiful the way it is done, and so believable that put in an arena teens WOULD turn into savages. In The Hunger Games, yes the main characters were fantastic, and many of the lesser as well, but Foxface is only Foxface, and the Careers are never more than random 1-dimensional bad guys.
I am not saying it wasn’t a GREAT read, I’m just saying it shouldn’t shake the publishing earth the way I am pretty sure it is going to. I anticipate this is the next Twilight series people are going to gush over. In a few years we’ll all be hosting Hunger Games final book parties. I’ll be amongst the attendees I’m sure. Also in terms of female main characters, Katiniss may surpass Bella in me wanting to shake sense into a character.
Talk about a smart girl being utterly clueless! Yes, it was great, but eh, maybe I’m just bitter because I think BR is the better book of the two and while Hunger Games will get tons of praise and likely a rather deserved award or two, BR will continue to be banned in many libraries.
Amazing what subtracting guns can do to a story. Suddenly it doesn’t feel as violent, but rather is more reminiscent of stories we heard growing up. The number of swords and arrow deaths in traditional fairytales is nothing to freak out about, but if bullets are flying, it will give “too many ideas” to teens and therefore must be dubbed an adult book. I’m pretty sure if I hadn’t read BR just a few months back this exeedingly long review would have been just as long only instead of a rant it would have just been one long squeeeeeal of delight over how much I loved the book.
Original Comment: Peer pressure, peer pressure, peer pressure. Geez guys! Alright, alright I’ll read it! Clearly Gregor was merely the prelude. As an author we were accustomed to your fun adventures involving a boy, his sister, and a world beneath our world.
But reading it gave me a horribly familiar feeling. There is a certain strain of book that can hypnotize you into believing that you are in another time and place roughly 2. And The Hunger Games? Well as I walked down the street I was under the disctinc impression that there were hidden cameras everywhere, charting my progress home.
Collins has written a book that is exciting, poignant, thoughtful, and breathtaking by turns. It ascends to the highest forms of the science fiction genre and will create all new fans for the writer. One of the best books of the year. Ever since her father died the girl has spent her time saving her mother and little sister Prim from starvation by hunting on forbidden land.
But worst of all is reaping day. Once a year the government chooses two children from each of the twelve districts to compete against one another in a live and televised reality show. Twenty-four kids and teens enter, and only one survives. Why not make it as if Peeta and Katniss were in love with one another? But in a game where only one person can live, Katniss will have to use all her brains, wits, and instincts to determine who to trust and how to outwit the game’s creators.
So sure, there are parts of this plot that have been done before. You could say it’s The Game meets Spartacus with some Survivor thrown in for spice. Some of the greatest works of literature out there, regardless of the readerships’ age, comes about when an author takes overdone or familiar themes and then makes them entirely new through the brilliance of their own writing.
Similarly, Collins takes ideas that have certainly seen the light of day before and concocts an amazingly addictive text. Your story often rests on the shoulders of the protagonist. Is this a believable character? Do you root for him or her? Katniss, on the other hand, is so good in so many ways. She sacrifices herself for her sister. She tries to save people in the game. Most remarkable to me was the fact that Katniss could walk around, oblivious to romance, and not bug me. You just want to bonk the ladies upside the head with a brick or something.
The different here is maybe the fact that since Katniss knows that Peeta has to play a part, she uses that excuse however unconsciously to justify his seeming affection for her. Thems smart writing. And did I mention the dialogue at all?
The humor? The words pop off the page. No faux slang here, or casual references to extinct dolphins. People love to characterize books by gender. It stars a boy? Boy book. A girl? Girl book. Now take a long lengthy look at the first book in the Hunger Games Trilogy. It stars a girl This is not a book that quietly slots into our preconceived stereotypes. And you know what happens to books that span genders? They sell very well indeed.
That is, if you can get both boys and girls to read them. The age range? Well, for most of this story I would have said ten and up. There are definite horror elements to it as well, so with that in mind I am upping my recommendation to 12 and up. You’ll see why. It occurs to me that there has never been a quintessential futuristic gladiator book for kids. That is undoubtedly the roughest term you can give this book.
Yet as I was taking a train to Long Island I found myself tearing up over significant parts of this story. You think of futuristic arena tales and your mind instantly sinks to the lowest common denominator. What Collins has done here is set up a series that will sink its teeth into readers.
The future of this book will go one of two ways. Either it will remain an unappreciated cult classic for years to come or it will be fully appreciated right from the start and lauded. My money lies with the latter. A contender in its own right.

The love triangle being pointless is quite literally the point ; Gale and Peeta are meant to represent the opposite sides of war something a certain plot point in book three really drives home. Katniss is frankly never romantically interested in either for almost all of books one and two; she grows to care about Peeta in the general sense, not just the romantic sense.
The eventual romance works for Katniss because it is safe for her. I more think this series is interesting in how it talks about the nature of power and the nature of uprising. The uprising, as a whole, is an upswelling of the people, a realization that there is strength in numbers.
Even during war, the individual lives of characters like Joanna and Haymitch and Finnick matter. They matter to the narrative, and thus they matter to us too. Her journey is not in becoming a Nice Person but in self-actualization. That is not a journey female characters are ever ever ever allowed to take and is arguably still something new. I almost want to case study this. It’s crazy that the first big ya dystopia is the best ya dystopia and one of the best series of all time, but this one is truly a classic and remains so incredible.
Thank you to Katniss Everdeen for being one of the most interesting characters ever written and to this book for having such a dynamic story. It’s relevant to our world. The parallels to our own society are so amazingly drawn, and the worldbuilding so good, that I’m not surprised this book was the one that broke through.

Every moment is filled with fear and tension. The characters are amazing. Katniss Everdeen is one of the best developed, most intriguing protagonists ever written. This is not necessarily a lottery you would want to win, as the Hunger Games contest is a gladiatorial battle to the death. Joining an ancient form of barbarity with a more modern version, the contest is seen by the nation on television, gussied up with all the pomp and circumstance of the World Cup, Superbowl and World Series combined, with the degrading intrusiveness of reality television.
Primrose Everdeen gets the bad news – from Jabberjays. They are transported to the Capitol, dressed up, interviewed on TV, offered training in several forms of combat and sent out there to do or die. The rest is their ordeal, which includes having to succeed not only with physical skills such as strength and agility.
In addition to the need for cunning in figuring out how to best their competitors, they have to figure out how to please the television audience, among which are sponsors who might send them much needed goods during the game.
Katliss is caught not only in a brutal contest with the other tributes, but in a confusing battle with her own adolescent emotions. What are her feelings, really, for her male counterpart from District 12, Peeta, and for her hunky bff Gale back home team Gale vs team Peeta anyone?
How can she express her rage at the operators of this horror for their inhumanity? I quite enjoyed reading the book, hated putting it down. Collins offers characters one can root for, with enough inner conflict and complexity to matter, well some of them, without it being overbearing, or slowing down the story. Ok, I liked the book. But I had a niggling concern early on. When I began reading, I wondered if there might be a political agenda at play. However, given the political climate of the twenty-teens, in which cynical forces of the right seek at every opportunity to portray government of any sort as the personification of evil, one must wonder if the author subscribed to the notion.
