Not sure why you’re not getting Netflix shows and movies in HD or 4K even though you have the right package and hardware? There are also some problems you might need to fix to get it to work properly. If your Netflix is streaming in poor quality, this article will help you troubleshoot the problem. Step 1: Your first step should be to check your Netflix plan and settings.

Begin by opening your account, and under the Profile and parental controls section, select your profile, find Playback settings , and click Change. Here, you will see four different options: Low, Medium, High, and Auto. Low: Streaming at this level will use about 0.

Streaming in low quality will force the content to play at standard definition. This is the best option for those with poor connections or those who are streaming with data limits. Medium: Medium-quality streaming will tick your data use up to around 0. High: Streaming in high quality opens you up to HD and 4K UHD streams with the Premium plan, but that also means your data usage could vary quite a bit.

Auto: As the name implies, this will let your streaming quality fluctuate with your current internet speeds and network connection to provide the most stable streaming experience. With that stability, however, comes a greater likelihood of drops in quality. Again, higher streaming resolutions will burn through data, so be mindful of your usage if you have a data cap. If you access your settings on a mobile device, you can also go into app settings and switch to Wi-Fi only mode or Set automatically , both of which can help you avoid going over your data limits when watching Netflix.

Step 4: Finally, note that not all Netflix content is in 4K or will automatically update to 4K. Hardware is also an important part of watching high-quality Netflix, especially if you are aiming for UHD quality. You will need at least a 60Hz TV or monitor that is designed to display 4K, and if you are streaming via an additional device, compatible HDMI cables are important, too.

If you’re using a laptop to stream, it will obviously need to be 4K capable and powerful enough, but even so, the browser you’re using will need to support HD or 4K, too more on that below. Additionally, not all streaming devices support UHD or 4K streaming, and not all content is available in these qualities.

Apple TV 4K review. Roku Streaming Stick 4K review. Amazon Fire Stick 4K Max review. While pretty much every popular internet browser is capable of streaming Netflix content in HD, just how HD it is will vary between browsers.

Not seeing a good number? We have a guide to everything you need to know about VPNs that will likely come in handy here. As soon as it is able to do so, the stream will be displayed clearly at full resolution.

If bandwidth slows down, the video resolution will drop until the full-res stream is sufficiently buffered again. This intelligent adjustment makes Netflix feel snappy, but at the wrong time of day, it can also make it look like garbage during the first few minutes of viewing. As we experimented with Netflix quality over an entire day, we discovered that the biggest factor influencing stream quality is the time of day and whether that time falls under typical peak hours for watching.

Yes, Netflix is available in 4K. Whether you can stream it, though, depends on the speed of your internet connection, how much you pay, what you watch, and even the hardware you stream it on. Netflix currently has the following three tiers:. You can follow the instructions below to upgrade your Netflix plan in the app on most devices or the web:.

In your Netflix account settings, you can restrict how much bandwidth Netflix consumes. These are separated into the following tiers: Auto the default , Low, Medium, and High. Netflix offers the following rough guideline for how much data is consumed on each tier during an hour-long stream:. This setting is profile-specific, rather than account-specific.

You have to change it for each profile on your account if you want to force high-quality streaming. You can also create a low- or medium-quality streaming account to use on mobile devices if you want to save bandwidth. In the evening, during peak streaming hours, your connection will be at its slowest due to increased strain on the network.

You should perform a test at peak hours to ensure you meet the 25 Mb requirement even during periods of high usage. If you pay for less than 25 Mb, you can contact your ISP and increase the speed of your plan. Keep in mind that 25 Mb is the bare minimum requirement. If other people in your home use the internet to watch videos, play games, or download files, it might impact your ability to stream at maximum quality. You should upgrade your internet plan to accommodate your family or household usage patterns.

Try moving closer to the router and see if this resolves your issue. For the best results, you can use a wired ethernet connection. If you want to stream Netflix in 4K in a browser , you can only do so in Microsoft Edge on Windows If you want to watch on an external monitor, it must support HDCP 2.

You can also use the Netflix app from the Windows 10 store. If you really want it, though, you can run Windows in a virtual machine. This is all due to digital rights management DRM , and Netflix trying to prevent 4K streams from being ripped or shared online. In the past, there were browser extensions for Firefox and Chrome that promised to enable higher quality streams in those browsers.

However, these extensions were removed from their respective stores. You should always be wary of such extensions especially those from untrustworthy sources. Not everything on Netflix is available in 4K. Your TV might do a fair job of upscaling content so it looks better than plain old p. You just have to cross your fingers and start playing it.

Provided you pay for the Premium tier and meet the hardware requirements, though, Netflix serves up 4K content whenever possible. To combat this, internet service providers ISPs use throttling, also known as traffic shaping. Think of the internet as a series of channels through which your data flows. Now, consider what would happen if the channel reserved for Netflix was narrower than the channel reserved for Facebook. This is by design as limiting the size of the channel restricts how much data can be sent.

Less data means less strain on the network—a trick ISPs use as a cheap way to inflate speed. In , a study was conducted on this at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Northeastern University. This is particularly common on cellular networks. There are a few ways you can tell if your ISP is throttling your connection. The easiest is watch for obvious red flags. You can test your speed, surf the web on a few different websites, or attempt a few large file downloads. You might want to contact your ISP directly and try to remedy the situation.

When you first start streaming something, it can take a while for the stream to reach its optimal quality setting. To reduce load time, a higher-quality stream will begin buffering in the background while the lower-quality one plays immediately. Sometimes, you just have to wait for Netflix to catch up.
